Charles E.N.Wills was the first child of Frank & Jenny Wills, born 31 May 1880 at Launceston. Like some of his relatives, Charles learned the trade of shoemaking, possibly from his future father-in-law who was a shoemaker by trade.

A widower with two children, William Graham, took Mary Gemmell as his second wife in 1574 together they produced another six children. After Mary's death William married again, his third wife being Maria Jane Haynes, they had four children. The third child of William's second marriage, born February 13,
1879, was Myra May and when she was 21 she married Charles Eric Neilson Wills.

After an interval of fifteen years Charles and Myra May produced their first child on March 5, 1915, they named him Francis Charles (Frank) after his grandfather. Frank had two sisters - Edna Mae born October 1917 and died February 1920 (she was buried at Footscray cemetery, Baptist section A3 509), the youngest of the family, Marjorie Enid was born February 13, 1920 less than a week before the death of her sister, Edna.

In 1929, Charles and his family lived at 7 Point Nepean Road, Elsternwick. In 1932 Charles' mother died, he was trustee and executor of the estate so the family moved into the old Wills' home at 66 Murray Street, Caulfield. Later, the property was sold, the house demolished and a number of flats known as "Newlyn Court" were built on the large block in 1937.

Charles then purchased their family home at 62 Allison Road, Elsternwick. Over the years he followed a number of trades - surgical bootmaker, bricklayer and wharf-labourer; he enjoyed cricket, football, horse-racing, fishing & shooting and was a member of the Carnegie male choir.

The family attended the Baptist Church and it was there that Frank met Ethel Rimington. When the 1939-45 war commenced Frank volunteered for the AIF and prior to sailing for the Middle East with 2/B Bn. 6 Division, he married his sweetheart, Ethel, at their Church in Elsternwick on 6 January 1940. Frank was captured on Crete and spent nearly five years as a prisoner-of-war - part of the time at Stalag XVIIIA. When the war ended he went to England on leave before being repatriated home to Australia. Frank & Ethel went to live in Gippsland where they raised their five children. Frank died at Heidelberg on February 20, 1979 - Ethel lives at Morwell.

Marjorie married Frank Chapman (born Dandenong, 25 April 1918) and lived in Perth and Melbourne before finally settling over in the west. They raised a family of four children before Frank (Chapman) died in Perth on January 20, 1988. Marjorie lives at Bassendean, WA.

Myra May Wills died at Elsternwick 8 November 1942 and was buried at Brighton Cernetery in the same grave as Charles' parents and his sister Clara. Charles continued to work on the wharves and re-married February 19, 1944, his second wife Meg (Maude Emily Groat) died at Mildura in 1946. About 1956 went over to WA to live with Marjorie and Frank Chapman. Charles became ill, entered Sunset Hospital, Dalkeith, where he died in 1959. He is buried at Karakatta Cemetery.

Charles married (1) Myra May Graham about 1900. Myra was born on 13 Feb 1879 in Glamorgan, Tas. She died on 8 Nov 1942 in Elsternwick, VIC.

They had the following children:

+ 375 M i Francis Charles Wills was born on 5 Mar 1915. He died on 20 Feb 1979.
376 F ii Edna Mae Wills was born about 1917. She died on 19 Feb 1920. She was buried in Footscray Cemetery.
+ 377 F iii Marjorie Enid Wills was born on 13 Feb 1920. She died on 26 Jul 2002.

Charles married (2) Maude Emily (Meg) Groat on 19 Feb 1944. Maude died in 1946 in Mildura, VIC.

223. Clara Jean Mary Wills (Francis Charles , Charles , Thomas , Thomas , Richard , Richard , George , George ) was born on 23 Jan 1882 in Emu Bay, Tas. She died on 1 May 1929 in Caulfield, VIC.

Notes by Max Parsons written in 1989.

Frank and Jenny Wills lived at Lilydale, Tasmania, when their first girl, Clara,
was born at Launceston on January 23, 1852. She attended school at Georgetown and
Burnie, enjoyed music and was skilled at fine art. Later Clara worked as a photograph re-toucher and colourist. As a hobby she painted in oils.

Clara was 25, tall and elegant, when she married Herbert (Bert) Parsons at Burnie on March 6, 1907, they then went to live at Scottsdale. Bert was the son of John and Emily (King) Parsons who had married in England before migrating to New Zealand in 1877. They came to Tasmania before Bert was born on July 15, 1883 at Branxholme. The Parsons' boys were carpenters and builders by trade.

Clara & Bert's first child, Dorothy Evelyn May, was born at Scottsdale 6 August 1908, then the family moved to Victoria where John Francis Herbert (Frank) was born at Northcote 9 January 1912.
The third child, Yvonne Joan Elona (Vonnie) was born 2 August 1913.

About that time, Clara's father and Bert Parsons went up to Queensland to investigate a mining venture so Clara, with her three youngsters, stayed with her mother at 66 Murray Street, Caulfield until Francis Charles and Bert abandoned the project and returned home.

About 1917-18, Bert & Clara rented a cottage at 78 Murray Street not far from the Wills' family home. While the family lived there Vivienne Clara was born 2 February 1915. About the same time, a cousin, Vivienne Scott was born; both girls were named after their Uncle Vivian who had been killed in action at Gallipoli. To distinguish the two Viviennes the girls were nicknamed Pat (Scott) and Mick (Parsons).

In 1920, Bert purchased a substantial brick home at 75 Trevellyan Street, Caulfield and "Fairlawns" became the family home. The fifth and final child, Maxwell Charles, was born 5 March 1920.

Clara always encouraged the children to learn to play a musical instrument and the family often gathered in the lounge to play as a group - Dorothy on piano and the others playing violins.

During the 1920's, Clara developed cancer and suffered for several years before she died at home on May 1, 1929, aged 47. She was buried in the Wills' family grave at Brighton cemetery.

Bert Parsons was a successful builder, having built large schools and institutes for the Public Works Department. In 1929, like most tradespeople, he was affected by the Depression and to win jobs had to tender at the very lowest prices. There was little or no profit but he managed to keep working most of the time. In 1931, when he was building the Caulfield Town Hall, he fell from the main roof and suffered injuries which left him with permanent back problems. Nevertheless he continued to work as
a builder-carpenter until he was over 80.

The loss of their mother and the difficult times of the Depression were major traumas which affected the young Parsons' children. Combined they tended to create a strong independent spirit in both boys and girls as they grew to maturity.

Dorothy married Raymond Morgan in 1936 and they had two children. Ray was a traveller with Rothel's of Caulfield, then Fowler's Vacola and later manager of Arnstel Golf Club, he died of cancer in 1981. Dorothy lives at their home in Frankston. Frank married Rosalie Judge in 1953 and they have two children. Among other things, Frank was a builder, designer, manufacturer of steel and fibre-glass products; he built and raced yachts, one which he built for himself was the "Aqua Bleu" - a 54 foot steel ketch in which he and Rose had many ocean pleasure trips. Dorothy, Ray, Frank and Rose were all keen golfers. Frank & Rose live in retirement at their home in Mt Eliza.

Clara's younger daughters - Vonnie and Vivienne each married an Ernest Green (not related).

Vonnie's husband was a fencing contractor and she had a very hard life living under canvas while her husband constructed miles of fencing around out-back stations. Contracts kept them out in the backblocks of New South Wales for many months on end. Conditions were so difficult that Vonnie lost two babes but she and Ern raised two other children. Vonnie died at Mildura on June 26, 1987.

Vivienne ("Mick") raised four children, mostly by her own efforts for she divorced Ern, owner and operator of "Ron Gol" a fruit growing block on the Darling River,
while the children were still young. Viv lives in her own home at Wentworth.

The youngest of the family, Max, worked in grocery retailing before the war. In 1940 he enlisted in the AIF and served with the 2/12 Field Artillery Regiment, 9th Division, at Tobruk, El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo campaigns until 1946. In 1951 he married Linda Edwards and they have four children. He worked as a manager and director of Crittenden's for most of his life and when they sold out to Myer he became a director for them until he retired. Linda and Max live at Cheltenham and, apart from golf, their present interest is genealogy - hence this dossier.

Clara's husband, Bert, spent his last twelve years in the Wentworth area, he was living with Vivienne when a stroke robbed him of his mobility, he spent three months in hospital and died on September 11, 1965, aged 82. He is buried at Wentworth cemetery.

Clara married Herbert Parsons on 6 Mar 1907 in Burnie, Tas. Herbert was born on 15 Jul 1883 in Branxholm, Tas. He died on 16 Sep 1965 in Wentworth, NSW.

They had the following children:

+ 378 F i Dorothy Evelyn May Parsons was born on 6 Aug 1908.
+ 379 M ii John Francis Herbert Parsons was born on 9 Jan 1912.
+ 380 F iii Yvonne Joan Elona Parsons was born on 2 Aug 1913. She died on 28 Jun 1987.
